Your First Strength Workout at Home

The hardest part of a first home workout is often deciding what to do once you have cleared a little floor space. Start with movements that use your own body weight, take your time, and focus on control rather than speed. A short routine you can repeat is a more useful starting point than an ambitious plan you cannot fit into your week.

Build a simple circuit

Try a chair squat, an incline push-up against a sturdy counter, a glute bridge, and a bird dog. Move through each exercise at a comfortable pace, leaving enough time to reset your position between repetitions. If you are new to exercise, begin with one or two rounds and stop while you still feel able to keep good form.

Let control lead

For a chair squat, send your hips back toward the seat and keep your feet planted; use the chair as a depth guide, not a place to drop. On an incline push-up, place your hands on a stable surface, keep your body in a long line, and lower only as far as you can comfortably control. If a movement causes sharp pain or the surface shifts, pause and choose a safer variation.

Progress one step at a time

Repeat the routine on days that fit your schedule, allowing time to recover between sessions. When the movements feel steady, add a few repetitions, choose a slightly lower surface for push-ups, or include another round—not all at once. Keep a brief note of what you did so your next workout has a clear, manageable starting point.
